The NHL is headed back to Fenway.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced on Friday in Las Vegas that the Boston Bruins will host the Winter Classic on January 1, 2023 at Fenway Park, the famous home of the Boston Red Sox.

Boston’s opponent has not yet been determined, but there’s been wide speculation that they’ll host the Pittsburgh Penguins, who were recently purchased by Fenway Sports Group, who owns the stadium and the Red Sox.

This is the second time that Boston will host an NHL outdoor game, as the 2010 Winter Classic was held at Fenway.

The Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens played the first regular-season outdoor game in modern NHL history at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton in 2003. The first Winter Classic was held at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo in 2008 and has since been played at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbour, and Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

The NHL also announced that the Carolina Hurricanes will host a Stadium Series outdoor game in February of 2023 at Carter-Finley Stadium while the Florida Panthers will host the 2023 All-Star Game.
