Once again, it seems like the Buffalo Sabres have not gotten off to the start to the season that they were hoping for. Even with a dominant 6-1 win over the New York Rangers on Thursday, they’re only 6-7-1 and have been inconsistent throughout the first month of the season.

Where the Sabres have really struggled is with their forward depth. While Tage Thompson seems to have returned to form, Dylan Cozens has had a tough start to the year, and overall, the team hasn’t been able to replace the production that they lost when they bought out Jeff Skinner’s contract in the summer.

According to Daily Faceoff insider Frank Seravalli, the Sabres may be on the market for a top six forward to help with that. But then there’s the other problem: what can they give up in return? The Sabres have some valuable pieces but if they takeaway in one area to improve in another, how much will they really improve the team?

Seravalli talked about the Sabres need for a top-six forward and the issues surrounding that on Daily Faceoff Live.

Frank Seravalli: So in [Kevyn Adams] conversations with teams around the league, as he’s canvassed everyone trying to figure out what is available, or potentially available I think is the key, the Buffalo Sabres have focused on a top-six forward. Now that probably doesn’t surprise you hearing that. You nod and you go “okay, yeah, that makes sense, this is a team that can probably use that”.

The tougher part of the conversation for Buffalo is, they’ve got to give to get. So what are you plucking off of your roster in order to make something happen?

Look, this has been a tough start to the season in Buffalo. Everyone knows that Kevyn Adams is certainly feeling the heat. This is year five. Not saying anything’s imminent, but the conversations that Buffalo has had have centered around the top six forward.
