Smith has reached the end of the five-year, $25 million contract that he inked with the Florida Panthers back in 2016 one year before the Golden Knights acquired him at the 2017 Expansion Draft. He would have been eligible to hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent on July 13.

There’s no word yet on what the terms of this contract extension will be. As Seravalli notes, the contract might not be signed until a later date due to offseason salary cap considerations. The Golden Knights are currently above the $82.5 million salary cap ceiling for the 2022-23 season.

Smith is one of the remaining players left from the Golden Knights’ Expansion Draft, as they acquired him and Jonathan Marchessault in a deal with the Panthers. Through 321 games with the Golden Knights, Smith has scored 98 goals and 230 points. He’s also added 52 points across 66 playoff games for the team.

Seravalli had Smith ranked at No. 23 on his 2022 Top 50 Unrestricted Free Agents board that came out earlier this month.
