Three players placed on NHL waivers for Oct. 24

A trio of NHL players hit the waiver wire on Saturday, as the Ottawa Senators waived left winger Kurtis MacDermid, the Colorado Avalanche waived Georgii Merkulov and the Nashville Predators waived Jack Ahcan.

All three players are now available to be claimed by any of the other 31 NHL teams. Should the go unclaimed and clear, they will be eligible to be assigned to the American Hockey League (AHL). If they are claimed, that will be announced around 2:00 PM Eastern on Sunday.

MacDermid, 32, has the most NHL experience to offer of the bunch. The veteran enforcer has 307 regular season games under his belt in which he has notched 32 points on 11 goals and 21 assists. This is his second season with the Senators, and the Ontario native has yet to appear in an NHL game this year. MacDermid has also had stints Los Angeles, Colorado and New Jersey in a career that dates back to the 2017-18 season.

Ahcan, a 29-year-old left-shot blueliner hailing from Savage, Minnesota, has skated in three games for the struggling Predators this year, recording an assist. Ahcan is a prolific offensive defenseman at the AHL level. Last year with the Colorado Eagles, he was good for 50 points on 11 goals and 39 assists in 61 regular season appearances. Ahcan was the captain at St. Cloud State at the NCAA level before he turned pro by signing with the Boston Bruins following the 2019-20 season.

Merkulov is a 26-year-old Russian who made the move to North America before turning pro, playing in the USHL and then at Ohio State University in college. He has been injured this season, but has 11 games of NHL experience, which came with the Boston Bruins across the past three seasons. Merkulov signed a one-year contract with the Avalanche this summer.
