It might be time to panic for the Toronto Maple Leafs

Losses and injuries just keep on piling up for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who sit last place in the Eastern Conference with a 9-10-3 record while star center Auston Matthews, starting goalie Anthony Stolarz and several others remain sidelined with various ailments.
The team hit a new low with a 5-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, and they’ve mustered only one victory since November 6. They’ve allowed more goals than any team in the East, and the offensive hot streak that kept them afloat early on has slowly started to dry up.
Now that American Thanksgiving is upon us, it’s getting late early for the Maple Leafs, as the odds do not favor teams outside the playoffs on Thanksgiving turning it around making it in come April. Toronto owns the longest active streak of consecutive postseason appearances, having appeared in the postseason every year since 2017.
Aside from Matthews and Stolarz, the Leafs have been without Jake McCabe, Matthew Knies, Chris Tanev, Nicolas Roy and Brandon Carlo recently. Getting at least some of these key players back will be a good first step in righting the ship, but the team was not playing up to its potential even when it was healthy.
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by analyst and former NHL video coach Steve Peters to discuss the issues that have been plaguing the Leafs on a consistent basis.
Steve Peters: I do start to worry about Toronto. I can’t believe we’re talking about Toronto making the playoffs. That’s insane to me right now. This is a team that potentially was looking at the Eastern Conference title. At American Thanksgiving, Toronto is in a lot of trouble, and there’s chaos in that locker room, so I’m concerned about Toronto.
