Free agent defenseman Tony DeAngelo will continue his professional career in Russia next season.

DeAngelo and the KHL’s SKA St. Petersburg agreed to terms on a one-year deal, the team announced Monday.

Last August, Anton Panchenko, a reporter for Russian sport website Championat, reported that DeAngelo would not play in the NHL in 2024-25, likely to sign with SKA.

The 28-year-old defender scored three goals and eight assists for 11 points, averaging 14:20 of ice time in 31 regular-season games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season.

Through eight NHL seasons, DeAngelo has 48 goals and 162 assists for 210 points and 329 penalty minutes in 371 career regular-season games with the Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers and Arizona Coyotes.

Taken No. 19 overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, DeAngelo spent four season in the Ontario Hockey League with the Sarnia Sting and Soo Greyhounds between 2011-12 and 2014-15. During that time, he scored 55 goals and 186 assists for 241 points and 311 penalty minutes in 236 regular-season games.

Before becoming a full-time NHLer, DeAngelo played parts of three seasons with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch, Tucson Roadrunners and Hartford Wolf Pack. During that time, he had 11 goals and 61 assists for 72 points in 123 regular-season games.

Last month, DeAngelo sat down with Jonny Lazarus and Colby Cohen as a guest on Daily Faceoff’s Morning Cuppa Hockey, sharing some hockey anecdotes, including the infamous fight with former New York Rangers’ goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.

“It was a tough game,” he said. “Georgy struggled. I struggled in the game. We’re playing against (the Pittsburgh Penguins), coming down the tunnel, I yelled at George, ‘Make a *bleeping* save.'”
