Luke Schenn has come full circle.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Schenn — whom they originally selected No. 5 overall in the 2008 NHL Draft — from the Vancouver Canucks, Daily Faceoff hockey insider Frank Seravalli reported Tuesday.

The Canucks received Toronto’s third-round selection in the 2023 NHL Draft as part of the deal. Schenn, a pending UFA, is under contract through the end of the 2022–23 season at an $850,000 NHL cap hit.

Schenn, 33, has three goals and 21 points while averaging 17:11 in 55 games with the Canucks this season. Last December, Schenn became the first defenseman in NHL history to record 3,000 hits.

Through 918 career games with the Maple Leafs, Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Arizona Coyotes, Anaheim Ducks, and Tampa Bay Lightning, Schenn has collected 41 goals and 190 points. He won the Stanley Cup with the Lightning in both 2020 and 2021.

Schenn kicked off his career with four seasons in Toronto, being named to the NHL’s All-Rookie team after logging 21:32 in 70 games with the Maple Leafs in 2008–09. In 2012, the Maple Leafs traded Schenn to Philadelphia in exchange for James van Riemsdyk.

Now, Schenn rejoins a Maple Leafs team in flux. Toronto has already made three trades on Tuesday alone, sending Rasmus Sandin and Pierre Engvall packing and bringing in Schenn, Erik Gustafsson, and Boston’s 2023 first-round draft pick.

Having also acquired Ryan O’Reilly, Noel Acciari, Jake McCabe, and Sam Lafferty in recent weeks, there’s no question Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas and his management team are going all in. However, the question remains: are they done?

Schenn could play his first game in a Maple Leafs sweater in more than a decade when the club returns to action on Wednesday to take on the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place.
