Maple Leafs’ Anthony Stolarz had every reason to be upset with team’s effort

The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered a frustrating overtime loss on Saturday night at the hands of the Seattle Kraken, as the group let a winnable game slip away when Joshua Mahura took advantage of a lackluster defensive effort to deliver the game-winner during the 3-on-3 overtime period.
In his postgame media availability, Stolarz did not hold back in sharing his thoughts about how the team performed in front of him.
“They just outworked us, plain and simple,” Stolarz said. “Overtime, you can’t let someone beat you up the ice there. [He] gets us a clear-cut breakaway with a minute left. You want to be on the ice in that situation, you’ve got to work hard… it cost us a point there.”
On Monday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discussed the reaction on the part of Stolarz and why the veteran goalie had every right to voice his frustration with the Leafs’ performance.
Tyler Yaremchuk: It was a spicy Anthony Stolarz postgame. Not only was he upset about the goal… but he also got ran pretty hard in the second period, and as you kind of watch the replay… there’s not a huge reaction to this. It actually takes Stolarz getting up until finally his teammates clue in.
Carter Hutton: I think Stolarz, this is him being a veteran… understanding that they’re culture needs to change. These are shots at some of the stars, too. This is a shot at William Nylander in overtime staying on the ice for too long and dogging it. Accountability in your room is going to be so important. That hit, for me, is one where it’s always a fine line if a guy drove you in. Marchment goes straight to the net, runs him over. Brandon Carlo is standing there watching his goalie get run over, and he doesn’t do anything… this is embarrassing, in my opinion.
