The Toronto Maple Leafs placed defenseman Dakota Mermis on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, retroactive to Dec. 8, according to a team statement Wednesday.

The team also announced that defenseman Henry Thrun from their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.

Mermis suffered the injury three minutes into the third period of Monday’s game between the Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning, when forward Gage Goncalves was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for kneeing the Toronto defender.

Mermis, 31, recorded one goal and is averaging 13:01 of ice time in 11 games with the Leafs this season. He’s also appeared in two AHL games with the Marlies.

In 89 career NHL games with Toronto, Utah Mammoth, Minnesota Wild, New Jersey Devils and Arizona Coyotes, Mermis has five goals and nine assists for 14 points. He’s also played in 465 AHL regular-season games across 10 seasons, where he’s recorded 21 goals and 125 assists for 146 points.

Meanwhile, Thrun, 24, has three goals and six assists for nine points in 19 games with the Marlies this season. He’s appeared in 119 career NHL games, all with the San Jose Sharks, where he’s scored five goals and 20 assists for 25 points.

The Maple Leafs are 14-11-4 with 32 points through 29 games in 2025-26, fifth in the Atlantic Division and 12th in the Eastern Conference. Toronto’s next game is Thursday when they host the San Jose Sharks, then Saturday they host Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on Hockey Night in Canada.

Forward William Nylander leads the team in points with 32 (11 goals and 21 assists), while John Tavares has a team-leading 13 goals, along with 17 assists and 30 points.
