It’s definitely hockey season when we talk about injuries.

During the team’s media day on Wednesday, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving stated that forward Max Domi will not be a full participant at the beginning of training camp due to a lower-body injury. He is currently listed as day-to-day.

Treliving didn’t reveal exactly what’s ailing Domi, nor did he mention when he was hurt. According to Leafs head coach Craig Berube, Domi was considered to be part of Toronto’s top line alongside captain Auston Matthews and winger Matthew Knies.

Since joining the Maple Leafs in 2023, the Winnipeg native has been a key part of the team’s core, bringing a particular snarl and depth scoring that the team had been searching for in recent years. While his production last season wasn’t as high as it was in 2023-24 – when he scored 47 points in 80 games – Domi proved to be a reliable asset for Toronto. In 74 games, he posted eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points. He went on to score seven points in 13 appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, including the overtime winner in Game 2 of the first round against the Ottawa Senators.

The Leafs made it as far as Game 7 of the second round before being unceremoniously bounced by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.

Domi is heading into his second season of his four-year contract that he signed with the Leafs in June 2024. It carries a cap hit of $3.75 million through the 2027-28 campaign, with a modified no-trade clause where Domi has submitted a 13-team no-trade list.

In 735 NHL regular-season contests, Domi has scored 138 goals and 312 assists for 450 points. He has also notched 33 points in 63 postseason games.

The Leafs’ training camp is scheduled to begin on Thursday.
