Leafs’ Morgan Rielly to miss game against Sabres on Friday

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube told reporters Friday that defenseman Morgan Rielly will not play in their road game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Berube said the team will see how Rielly, 31, is feeling ahead of Saturday’s second half of their home-and-home with the Sabres.
He also said that forward Nick Robertson will be a scratch on Friday.
The news comes one day after the Maple Leafs placed defenseman Chris Tanev on injured reserve, retroactive to Oct. 21, after the 35-year-old left Tuesday’s game against the New Jersey Devils with an upper-body injury. The team also recalled defender Dakota Mermis from the AHL.

Through seven games in 2025-26, Rielly has two goals and four assists for six points, averaging 22:11 of ice time. Now in his 13th NHL season, Rielly has 89 goals and 430 assists for 519 points in 880 career regular-season games.
Rielly, a native of Vancouver, has also played in 70 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, recording 15 goals and 32 assists for 47 points.
One of the Maple Leafs’ most prolific defenders, Rielly has four 50-point seasons, including a 2018-19 campaign that saw him score a career-high 20 goals and record a career-high 72 points. That season, he finished fifth in Norris Trophy voting.
Rielly, taken No. 5 overall by Toronto in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, spent three seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Moose Jaw Warriors. In 143 career regular-season games, he recorded 21 goals and 79 assists for 100 points, including a 2012-13 campaign where he finished with 54 points (12 goals and 42 assists) in 60 games.
