The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Derek Clancey as an Assistant General Manager for the team.

Clancey will oversee the player personnel department in his role, largely being involved with the team’s professional and amateur scouting teams. He currently has two other staff members in the player personnel department, with Dave Morrison acting as director and Wes Clark serving as an assistant director.

“We are excited to add Derek to our hockey operations department,” said Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving. “I feel Derek is one of the premier talent evaluators in our game. He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and will play a big role as we continue our goal of building a championship team.”

This will be Clancey’s second year as an assistant general manager, as he held the same position with the Vancoucer Canucks for the 2022-23 season, overseeing their amateur and professional scouting departments. The Canucks made several trades of note last season during his tenure, including moving on from captain Bo Horvat and trading for the likes of Filip Hronek, Vitali Kravtsov, and Ethan Bear, all likely assisted by Clancey’s pro scouting department. The amateur scouting department also got to make seven draft picks under his watch at the 2023 draft, including first round pick Tom Willander.

Clancey previously spent 14 seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2007 to 2021, serving as a professional scout from 2007 to 2010, and then as the director of professional scouting from 2010 to 2021. He won three Stanley Cups with the Penguins, one as a pro scout in 2009 and then two more as director of pro scouting in 2015 and 2016.

This isn’t the first time Clancey has worked with Treliving, as Clancey worked with the Calgary Flames as a pro scout in the 2021-22 season before he was hired by the Canucks for the 2022-23 season.

Clancey will become the fifth assistant GM in Toronto, as they now have one for every main department in their organization. On top of Clancey overseeing the team’s scouting departments, Brandon Pridham is responsible for the team’s finances and salary cap expertise, Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser is responsible for player development, Ryan Hardy oversees their minor league teams, and Darryl Metcalf is responsible for hockey research and development.
