Some roster moves to make space for a prospect in the Six.

On Monday, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that defenseman Brandon Carlo has been placed on injured reserve. In response, the team has called up forward Jacob Quillan from its American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.

Carlo’s placement on IR is retroactive to Nov. 13, when he was in the lineup for the Leafs’ 4-3 overtime loss against the Los Angeles Kings. The 28-year-old registered 19:44 of ice time in the defeat, a little below is average for the season. It was later revealed that Carlo was suffering from a lower-body injury that ended up keeping him out of the lineup this past Saturday, when Toronto fell to the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-2.

Per the league’s IR rules, Carlo won’t be eligible to return to the Leafs’ lineup until Saturday night, when they pay a visit to the Montreal Canadiens.

Through 18 games, the Colorado Springs, Colo. native has posted just two assists, with a plus/minus of +2 while averaging a little over 20 minutes of ice time per game.

Quillan has had a strong start to his AHL season. In 14 games with the Marlies, the 23-year-old has scored two goals and 12 assists for 14 points, currently leading the team in scoring. It comes after a respectable rookie season, where Quillan notched 37 points in 67 games during the 2024-25 season. He also made his NHL debut with the Leafs on Jan. 25 against the Ottawa Senators.

It will be interesting to see if Quillan gets into the lineup at all this week and where he might fit in. Easton Cowan was called up from the Marlies after Auston Matthews was placed on IR, joining the third line as a result. The Leafs’ fourth line currently consists of Dakota Joshua, Steven Lorentz and Calle Jarnkrok.

The Leafs (8-9-2) are scheduled to host the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night.
