The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Friday that center Scott Laughton will be out of the lineup on a week-to-week basis due to a lower-body injury.

Laughton likely sustained the injury during Thursday’s 3-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, although if he did, he played through it, as he never left the game and played as late as 2:20 left in the third period. The cause of the injury is not known, as is the specifics of it.

Based on the timeline for Laughton’s return, it’s likely that he won’t be ready for their season opener on Oct. 8 against the Montreal Canadiens and probably a few more games beyond that.

Laughton had an uneventful game on Thursday, with just two giveaways, one hit taken, two blocked shots and a 45.45% success rate in the faceoff dot in 11:15 of ice time. He finishes his preseason with two goals and two assists for four points in three games, with all four points coming in the Leafs’ 7-2 win over the Canadiens.

With Laughton out, David Kampf has been seen in a regular practice jersey and will likely take over Laughton’s spot as the fourth line center. Laughton’s injury does give the Leafs a bit of time to figure out their forward group, as Easton Cowan’s play in the preseason has earned him a spot on the team, making one of Kampf, Calle Jarnkrok and Nick Robertson expendable. With Laughton out, the Leafs will get the chance to see how Cowan performs without having to put one of those three forwards on waivers.

Laughton produced around what he usually does as a whole last season, as he put up 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points in 80 games with the Philadelphia Flyers and the Leafs. However, most of that came with the Flyers with 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points in 60 games, as after he was dealt to the Leafs at the 2025 trade deadline, his production dropped off to two goals and two assists for four points in 20 games. He also only had two assists in 13 playoff games with the Leafs.

Laughton also struggled to drive play with the Leafs, with a 42.86 5v5 expected goals for percentage, although that was more due to his offensive struggles than his defensive play.
