Sergei Bobrovsky’s struggles continue after poor showing in Seattle

As the Toronto Maple Leafs continue their up-and-down start to the season, concerns run rampant about their goaltending situation.
The Maple Leafs came away with a disappointing 5-4 loss to the struggling Seattle Kraken on Wednesday night. What’s even more disappointing was how bad goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was. The Vezina Trophy winner faced just 17 shots in the game, with the final two goals he allowed being questionable, at best. For a guy brought in to bring some stability in net, Bobrovsky has been underwhelming, going 3-5-2 in 10 games, with a 3.29 goals-against average and an .885 save percentage.
On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton discuss the woes with Bobrovsky and why it’s a concerning trend in Leaf Land.
Tyler Yaremchuk: The fourth goal that Bobrovsky gave up wasn’t a very good one. Ryker Evans just beat some crazy clean off the rush. So Bobrovsky, who’s been having a bit of a tough year, right after the Leafs tie the game, gives up this goal from Brandon Montour. Just sneaks right under his arm. You’re paying a goalie $7 million to make those stops and then some.
Carter Hutton: That’s a $700,000 save. That ain’t a $7 million save. That’s a routine save in the NHL. That’s a save that has to be made and then magnified by the point of the game where you’re at. You were just able to claw back in this game. Auston Matthews ties it with the goalie out of the net. There’s like an emotional peak, but he’s a veteran guy. You need to get back in the crease, and now your team is giving you a situation where you can push this overtime and find a way to win.
To not get a point in that moment based off that goal, that is a routine save all day. Yes, it happens. Pucks go in, but the magnitude of what his game has been and where he’s at, that is very tough. Allow five goals on 17 shots on the road against a team you got to beat, and they’re not able to do it.
