The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenseman Conor Timmins to a two-year contract extension.

The contract is worth $2.2 million and will carry an AAV of $1.1 million annually. Timmins was acquired by the Maple Leafs from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Curtis Douglas earlier this season. The 6’9 forward Timmins was traded for has yet to play an NHL game for his new team, while Timmins is having a successful season in Toronto so far.

In 18 games, Timmins has one goal (the first of his NHL career) and 12 points along with an even +/- rating and two penalty minutes. He carved out a role for himself on the Maple Leafs’ blueline after Jake Muzzin and Victor Mete went down with long-term injuries.

Timmins plays more than 16 minutes per game, most often alongside T.J. Brodie. Through 119 minutes of ice time together, the Timmins/Brodie pairing has a 60.9% xGoals percentage which is second among all Toronto defense pairings who’ve played more than 100 minutes together.

Prior to being traded to Toronto, Timmins was a top prospect for the Colorado Avalanche. He was originally selected in the second-round of the 2017 NHL Draft by Colorado. He put up 115 points in 163 games for the Soo Greyhounds. What looked like a promising career almost came crashing down when he missed the entire 2018-19 season with a concussion.

He returned the following year and split his time between playing for the Avalanche and their AHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles. He went on to play 33 games for the Avalanche, scoring seven assists. Timmins was then dealt to the Arizona Coyotes as part of the Darcy Kuemper trade.

The 24-year-old right-handed defenseman has played 59 games in the NHL, scoring one goal and 19 points for the Avalanche, Maple Leafs, and Coyotes.
