Report: Leafs sign Troy Stecher to two-year extension

A veteran blueliner is staying in The Six for a couple more years.
According to multiple reports, the Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenseman Troy Stecher to a two-year contract extension. The deal will carry a cap hit of $1.35 million through the 2027-28 campaign.
Can confirm Troy Stecher is signing a two-year extension with the #leafs carrying a $1.35M AAV. @DhaliwalSports and @FriedgeHNIC were on it.
It’s a nice little pay bump for Stecher, who was a pending unrestricted free agent after the two-year contract he signed with the Edmonton Oilers in July 2024 came to an end this past spring. That deal had a cap hit of $787,500. His new deal is the first time he will make $1 million in a season since 2023-24, when he received $1.1 million from the Arizona Coyotes in their final season before moving to Utah.
Stecher made his way to Toronto in November, as the Oilers put him on waivers, with the Leafs claiming the right-handed rearguard on Nov. 15. While the Leafs struggled for just about the entire year, the Richmond, B.C. native had one of the more productive seasons of his NHL career. After going pointless in six games with the Oilers, Stecher scored three goals and 11 assists for 14 points in 58 games with Toronto, matching his career-best season in 2022-23, when he split time between the Coyotes and Calgary Flames. He also registered a plus/minus of -8 while averaging 19:46 of ice time per game. By the end of the season, which saw the Leafs fail to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in a decade, Stecher was one of the team’s better defenders.
The 32-year-old certainly earned himself a new deal on a Leafs squad that is experiencing some change. New general manager John Chayka already added to the back end prior to the 2026 NHL Draft, acquiring defenseman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In 624 regular-season games in the NHL, Stecher has scored 25 goals and 106 assists for 131 points, with another seven points in 29 postseason contests.
