Sceptres re-sign Renata Fast to three-year contract extension

One of the best blueliners in the game is staying in The Six.
On Wednesday, the Toronto Sceptres announced that the team has re-signed defender Renata Fast to a three-year contract extension. The deal, set to begin next season, will carry through the 2028-29 campaign. With that, Fast becomes the first player the Sceptres protect in the 2026 Expansion Roster Distribution Process.
Fast was one of the three foundational signings made by Toronto prior to the league’s inaugural season, along with Sarah Nurse and captain Blayre Turnbull. Fast has been crucial to the team’s success in the first two years, showcasing her ability to be one of the game’s best rearguards. She was key in helping Toronto finish with the PWHL’s best record during the 2024 campaign, and second the year after. While the team failed to build off their regular-season performance in the postseason, it hasn’t taken away from the impressive play of the Hamilton, Ont. native.
This past season, the 31-year-old scored a goal and nine assists for 10 points in 26 games. She posted a plus/minus of -3 while leading the team in average ice time (24:40), which was good for fourth in the PWHL. It was a far cry from her dominant 2024-25 campaign, in which she finished tied for the league lead in defensive scoring with 22 points and earned Defender of the Year honors.
In 80 career regular-season games, Fast has scored 10 goals and 35 assists for 45 points, with five assists in nine Walter Cup Playoff contests.
The Sceptres still have two more players to protect before the end of the first phase of the expansion process, which ends on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET. All eight active franchises can protect three players during this time, keeping them free from being picked up from the league’s four new teams – Detroit, Hamilton, Las Vegas and San Jose.
