The group of 25 players aims to capitalize on the growing talent wave across the country and secure Olympic gold.
Many from this group also represented the U.S. at the 4 Nations Face-Off this past February, including Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews, who captained the Americans to a second-place finish, falling to rival Canada in a thrilling championship contest. Matthews was one of the first six players named to the Olympic roster in June, alongside brothers Brady and Matthew Tkachuk, forward Jack Eichel, and defensemen Quinn Hughes and Charlie McAvoy.
As expected, two-time defending Vezina Trophy winner and reigning Hart Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck has been selected to be the team’s No. 1 goaltender, hoping to build off a solid performance at the 4 Nations.
Here’s the full roster of players selected by the USA and Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin and his staff for the tournament.
Forwards: Matt Boldy, Kyle Connor, Jack Eichel, Jake Guentzel, Jack Hughes, Clayton Keller, Dylan Larkin, Auston Matthews, JT Miller, Brock Nelson, Tage Thompson, Brady Tkachuk, Matthew Tkachuk, Vincent Trochek
Defensemen: Brock Faber, Noah Hanifin, Jack Hughes, Seth Jones, Charlie McAvoy, Jake Sanderson, Jaccob Slavin, Zach Werenski
Goaltenders: Connor Hellebuyck, Jake Oettinger, Jeremy Swayman
This will be the first time NHLers will be allowed to compete at the Olympics since Sochi in 2014. In the “NHL era” of the Olympic hockey tournaments, the U.S. has made it to the gold medal game twice, losing to Canada in the 2002 and 2010 finals. Next year’s team hopes to right that story in their favor, hoping to win gold for the first time since 1980.
Here’s the U.S. schedule for its group stage games:
- Thursday, Feb. 12: Latvia vs. USA, 3:10 p.m. ET
- Saturday, Feb. 14: USA vs. Denmark, 3:10 p.m. ET
- Sunday, Feb. 15: USA vs. Germany, 3:10 p.m. ET
The play-off round will take place on Feb. 17, with the quarterfinals taking place the following day. Both semifinal games will occur on Feb. 20. The bronze medal game will be held on Feb. 21, with the tournament culminating on Feb. 22 with the gold medal game.
