The Utah Mammoth were a very popular off-season pick to be a team that would go from missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs last year to making them this year, and they’ve made good on that potential so far.

jWith a record of 8-2-0, the Mammoth have rattled off seven straight wins powered by an electrifyingly productive top six forward unit headlined by Logan Cooley, Clayton Keller, Nick Schmaltz, JJ Peterka and Dylan Guenther. Their 16 points have them two clear of the Colorado Avalanche for first place in a loaded division that also features the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars, and if they can keep this up, general manager Bill Armstrong has a chance to coast to the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year award come the summer.

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by The Sheet’s Jeff Marek to discuss Utah’s hot start to the season and why the team isn’t going anywhere.

Carter Hutton: I want to change topics here and get into the Utah Mammoth. You had a chance to chat with Bill Armstrong the other day, and this is a team sitting on top of the Central Division. As we predict in the media world… we thought this was a team that would take a step forward, and they’ve taken a big step forward. Where do they go from here?

Jeff Marek: I don’t think that Bill Armstrong is done for one second. I fully believe that if Aaron Ekblad would have gone to market, Utah would have been one of the teams knocking on his door. I think that right now, perhaps moreso than ever, he’s looking at this murderer’s row in the Central… saying “If you’re gonna leave all these points on the table, we’re going to gobble them up like PacMan.” I think this is going to be an aggressive general manager and a really aggressive Utah Mammoth team all season long.
