Mammoth hire Trevor Lewis to staff
A former longtime NHLer is uniting with his hometown team.
On Tuesday, the Utah Mammoth announced that they have hired Trevor Lewis as a video scout and an ambassador for youth and amateur hockey.
Lewis, 39, hails from Salt Lake City. The former forward played 15-plus seasons in the NHL, winning two Stanley Cups as a member of the Los Angeles Kings.
He is one of a handful of Utah natives that have played in the NHL. His 237 career points puts him second all-time behind former Washington Capitals forward Steve Konowalchuk (396 points) for the most points in NHL history among Utah-born players.
Lewis was selected 17th overall out of the United Stated Hockey League (USHL) by the Kings in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. After a season with the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and some time spent with Los Angeles’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Manchester Monarchs, Lewis made his NHL debut in the 2008-09 season, playing six games for the Kings.
It wasn’t until the 2010-11 season that Lewis became a regular with Los Angeles, when he recorded three goals and 10 assists for 13 points in 72 games. He went on to become a fixture in the Kings’ bottom six over the next decade, helping them win the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014 while epitomizing the gritty, hard-nosed ethos of the team during that era.
After leaving the Kings as a free agent following the 2019-2020 season, Lewis played one season with the Winnipeg Jets and two with the Calgary Flames before returning to Los Angeles for his final two seasons in the NHL.
With the Mammoth now in Utah, and Lewis on board as an ambassador, the hope is for more NHLers to come out of the Beehive State in future generations, much in the way the Arizona Coyotes’ presence helped produce Arizona-born NHLers such as the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies.
