The Utah Mammoth have agreed to terms with center Kevin Rooney on a one-year, two-way contract, the club announced Monday evening.

Rooney, 32, had been attending New Jersey Devils training camp on a professional tryout basis. The Canton, Massachusetts product will earn a $775,000 salary in the NHL and $325,000 in the AHL during the 2025-26 season, according to PuckPedia.

The Mammoth lost center Curtis Douglas on waivers to the Tampa Bay Lightning earlier on Monday, opening the door for a veteran in Rooney to add depth to their organization.

Rooney appeared in 70 games with the Calgary Flames during the 2024-25 season, collecting five goals and 10 points while averaging 9:25 of ice time and winning 47.2 percent of his faceoffs.

An undrafted player, Rooney spent four seasons at Providence College before turning pro in the Devils organization back in 2016. He made his NHL debut with the Devils in the 2016-17 season and became a regular in their lineup two years later.

After parts of four seasons with the Devils, Rooney crossed the Hudson River to sign with the New York Rangers as an unrestricted free agent in 2020. He remained a fixture in the Rangers’ bottom six over the following two seasons and skated in 15 playoff games during their run to the Eastern Conference Final in 2022.

The Flames signed Rooney to a two-year contract on July 13, 2022, the same day they lost Johnny Gaudreau to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Rooney never found his footing under then-head coach Darryl Sutter and was demoted to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers midway through the 2022-23 season; after recovering from a shoulder injury, he returned to the Flames in 2023-24 and signed a one-year extension to remain their No. 4 center in 2024-25.

In 330 career games over parts of nine NHL seasons with the Flames, Rangers, and Devils, Rooney has collected 32 goals, 60 points, and 134 penalty minutes. He recorded two assists in his 15 playoff games with the Rangers in 2022.
