One of the rising stars in the game has reportedly turned down a huge contract extension.

According to Frank Seravalli, the camp of Utah Mammoth forward Logan Cooley rejected an offer to sign the young scorer to an eight-year deal. The contract would’ve had an AAV of $9.6 million through the 2033-34 campaign.

Cooley is heading into the final season of his three-year, entry-level contract, which he signed with the team, then known as the Arizona Coyotes, in July 2023. The deal has a cap hit of $950,000, but an AAV of $4.45 million, thanks to $3.5 million in performance bonuses and an additional $95,000 in signing bonuses.

The alleged offer would’ve made the former Minnesota Golden Gopher the highest-paid player on the Utah roster, eclipsing Mikhail Sergachev’s salary of $8.5 million. It would’ve also given the promising team one of its key weapons for the foreseeable future.

It’s not yet known exactly why Cooley said no to the big payday, but one could cite the recent signings of New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes and Anaheim Ducks blueliner Jackson LaCombe, both of whom are raking in $9 million a year in their extensions.

There’s no question that Cooley is a key part of the Mammoth’s core. Along with Clayton Keller, the 21-year-old has a significant scoring touch that can help Utah be, at least, a bubble team for the Stanley Cup Playoffs this coming season.

In 2024-25, Cooley had the best performance of his young NHL career. In 75 games, the Pittsburgh native scored 25 goals and 40 assists for 65 points, finishing second on the team in scoring behind Keller. He also posted a plus/minus of +1 while averaging close to 18 minutes of ice time per game.

In 157 career appearances, he has totaled 45 goals and 64 assists for 109 points.
