Mammoth sign Ben McCartney to two-year contract extension

The Utah Mammoth announced Wednesday that the club has signed journeyman left winger Ben McCartney to a two-year, two-way contract extension that carries a $775,000 average annual value.
Through 63 appearances in 2024-25 with the AHL affiliated Tucson Roadrunners, McCartney finished with 33 points counting 16 goals and 17 assists coupled with 86 penalty minutes and a minus-one rating. McCartney then added another two goals and one assist for three points through a trio of postseason appearances.
Originally chosen by the former Arizona Coyotes in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft, McCartney made his NHL debut during the 2021-22 season where through two appearances he finished with four penalty minutes while averaging more than 14 minutes in ice time per game.
A 23-year-old native of Macdonald, Man., McCartney has spent part of five seasons in the minors where through 215 career contests he has collected 48 goals and 62 assists for 110 points coupled with 280 penalty minutes and a minus-31 mark.
A graduate of the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings, McCartney skated in the junior circuit for part of five seasons from 2016-21 in which he notched 151 points counting 61 goals and 90 assists through 205 total appearances. In his final junior season, McCartney finished second in team scoring as he reached point-per-game production counting 25 goals and 36 assists coming in 61 contests.
With McCartney now signed, the Mammoth have three remaining pending restricted free agents including forwards Jack McBain and Kailer Yamamoto as well as defenseman Montana Onyebuchi. Utah’s noteworthy pending unrestricted free agents include forwards Nick Bjugstad and Michael Carcone plus veteran defenseman Robert Bortuzzo.
Utah concluded its first season in Salt Lake City with a 38-31-13 showing and seven points back of the Central Division rival St. Louis Blues for the second wildcard seed in the Western Conference.
