The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired left winger Matias Maccelli from the Utah Mammoth in exchange for a conditional third-round selection in the 2027 NHL Draft.

Per hockey insider Frank Seravalli, should Maccelli score 51 or points with the Maple Leafs in 2025-26 and the team qualifies for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the return will improve to a 2029 second-round selection.

A frequent health scratch in 2024-25, including all but four of Utah’s final 29 games, Maccelli was limited to 55 appearances in which he registered eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points coupled with eight penalty minutes and a minus-13 rating while averaging nearly 14 minutes of time on ice per game.

Originally chosen in the fourth round of the 2019 NHL Draft by the former Arizona Coyotes, the 24-year-old Finnish-born forward has since skated in 224 career contests in which he has collected 37 goals and 93 assists for 130 points. With the Coyotes in 2023-24, Maccelli finished with a career-best 57 points counting 17 goals and 40 assists coming in 82 games.

Per PuckPedia, Maccelli is entering the final year of a three-year contract that carries a $3.425-million average annual value. No salary was retained by Utah in the trade to Toronto, adds TSN’s Chris Johnston.

In joining the Maple Leafs, Maccelli may slot into a top-six role with the expected exit of pending unrestricted free agent right winger Mitch Marner. A Saturday report indicated the Maple Leafs are in discussions with Vegas to deal Marner’s rights to the Golden Knights ahead of the opening of unrestricted free agency on July 1.

For the Mammoth, the Maccelli move is the latest transaction by general manager Bill Armstrong who last Wednesday acquired forward J.J. Peterka from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for fellow forward Josh Doan and defenseman Michael Kesselring.
