The Vancouver Canucks have shut down defenseman Filip Hronek for the rest of the 2022–23 regular season as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury, head coach Rick Tocchet said Thursday.

Hronek, 25, has appeared in four games with the Canucks since being acquired from the Detroit Red Wings ahead of the 2023 trade deadline. In 64 games with the Red Wings and Canucks this season, Hronek collected a career-high 39 points (nine goals, 30 assists) while averaging 21:42 per night.

On Mar. 1, the Canucks traded a conditional 2023 first-round pick and a 2023 second-round pick to the Red Wings in exchange for Hronek and a 2023 fourth-round pick. Hronek is under contract at a $4.4 million cap hit through the end of the 2023–24 season, at which point he’ll be eligible to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights.

The Canucks currently rank sixth in the Pacific Division with a 34–34–6 record and 74 points through 74 games this season. They currently sit 11 points back of the Winnipeg Jets for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Red Wings originally selected Hronek in the second round (No. 53 overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft. The six-foot defenseman, who shoots right, has amassed 30 goals and 157 points in 309 career games over parts of five NHL seasons with the Red Wings and Canucks.

With Hronek no longer at their disposal for the rest of the season, the Canucks will return to action at 7:00 p.m. PT on Friday evening for their Pride Night game against the Calgary Flames at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.
