The Vancouver Canucks have placed forward Filip Chytil on injured reserve, sidelining the Czech veteran in what has become an injury-plagued career.

Chytil did not participate in Vancouver’s Friday practice after sustaining a hard hit in Thursday’s 3-2 road loss to the San Jose Sharks.

Challenging for a puck on the boards, Chytil came out on the wrong end of a check from Sharks defenseman Darnell Nurse and is now being evaluated for a re-aggravation of the upper-body injury he picked up in pre-season, which kept him out of the first eight Canucks games of the regular season.

In seven games this season, the 27-year-old has a pair of assists, but now finds himself back on injured reserve, a common situation for him, having played just 34 games over parts of three seasons with Vancouver,  largely due to a series of concussions.

In his place, Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson announced that the hockey club has called up forward Jacob Quillan for Saturday’s home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, putting him in line to make his Canucks debut against his former team.

Quillan, 24, joined the Canucks in a trade in early October, heading west alongside Brandon Buhr in exchange for Aatu Räty. He was quickly assigned to the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks, where he has since scored five goals and two assists in five games.

The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native has played 24 NHL games for the Maple Leafs and scored his first and only NHL goal against the Dallas Stars on April 13.

“When I first got the call, I was pretty shocked,” Quillan told Daily Faceoff Vancouver. “I really didn’t know how to process it. When I signed in Toronto initially, the management staff really wanted me. With the new management, there were a lot of changes; so many guys joined the team, and so many guys left. So it’s just part of the shrapnel, I guess. But I’m glad to be somewhere I’m wanted; it gives me a confidence boost for sure, so I’m really looking forward to my journey here.”

The Canucks search for their second home win of the season on Saturday against Toronto, before looking ahead to a Tuesday clash with the Anaheim Ducks, the team they snapped a 10-game losing streak against in Anaheim last week.
