Canucks sign Jack Thompson to one-year contract

The Vancouver Canucks may be at the beginning of a new regime under general manager Ryan Johnson, but they’re showing that they’re willing to reinvest in pieces acquired by the old regime.
On Friday, the Canucks announced that they have signed defenseman Jack Thompson to a one-year, two-way contract.

Thompson, 24, was acquired by the Canucks at this past season’s trade deadline from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Jett Woo. He played 14 games for Vancouver’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Abbotsford Canucks after the trade, putting up an impressive three goals and 10 assists for 13 points.
Prior to coming over in the deal this season, the Courtice, Ontario native played 42 games for the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda, notching three goals and nine assists for 12 points.
The Tampa Bay Lightning initially selected Thompson in the third round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. After finishing up his junior career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), which he split between the Sudbury Wolves and Soo Greyhounds, Thompson made his full-time professional debut with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch in the 2022-23 season, when he registered eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points in 71 games.
In the 2023-24 season he tallied five goals and 27 assists for 32 points in 46 games, while also making his NHL debut for one game with the Lightning, before getting dealt at that year’s trade deadline to San Jose for forward Anthony Duclair. He finished up that season going pointless in two games for the Sharks, while putting up a goal and eight assists for nine points with the Barracuda.
Thompson got his longest look at the NHL level in the 2024-25 season, when he scored four goals and added six assists for 10 points with the Sharks. He also notched three goals and 11 assists for 14 points in 27 games that season for the Barracuda.
Internationally, Thompson represented Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he had a goal and three assists for four points in seven games.
