Vancouver Canucks sign Vasily Podkolzin to two-year contract extension

Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin announced Thursday that the Canucks have agreed to terms with Vasily Podkolzin on a two-year contract extension. The contract will have an average annual value (AAV) of $1 million.

Podkolzin split the 2023-24 season with the Canucks and their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Abbotsford Canucks. Podkolzin registered two points in 18 NHL games and scored 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points in 44 AHL games.

“We are happy with how hard Vasily has worked on his game to try and become a more consistent player,” said Allvin. “While there is still room for him to grow, starting the year in Abbotsford and working his way back up to Vancouver shows the type of commitment and dedication we want in all our players. Our group looks to forward to helping Vasily continue to improve and get better.”

The Moscow, Russia product was oringally selected No. 10 overall in the 2019 NHL Draft by the Canucks and over the course of 136 games has accumulated 18 goals and 17 assists for 35 points in that frame.

On the international stage, Podkolzin has taken home hardware while representing his country, winning the bronze and silver medals with Russia at the 2019 and 2020 IIHF World Junior Championships, along with grabbing silver at the 2019 Under-18 World Championships.

The Canucks are set to face off against the Winnipeg Jets tonight in their final game of the 2023-24 regular season. Vancouver will play the Nashville Predators in the opening round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
