The Vancouver Canucks will hold defenseman Tyler Myers out of their lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets in anticipation of a possible trade.

Vancouver hockey insider Rick Dhaliwal first reported that Myers would not play against the Jets, with the Canucks confirming the report shortly thereafter. The news broke shortly after ESPN’s Kevin Weekes indicated that the Canucks were “fielding plenty of calls” on Myers earlier on Wednesday afternoon.

Myers, 36, has one goal and eight points while averaging 20:13 of ice time in 57 games with the Canucks this year. The 6’8″ right-shot defender is signed through the 2026-27 season at a $3 million cap hit; he also has a full no-movement clause in his deal, although it converts into a 12-team no-trade list on July 1.

According to The Fourth Period insider David Pagnotta, Myers has been presented with a “trade option” and is evaluating possible next steps with his camp. As per the terms of his contract, Myers has full veto power over any possible trade or demotion for this season.

Myers is currently in the midst of his seventh season with the Canucks, having originally signed a five-year contract with the club as an unrestricted free agent in 2019. The Houston, TX product has helped the Canucks reach the playoffs twice during his tenure, in 2020 and 2024.

A first-round pick (No. 12 overall) of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2008 NHL Draft, Myers is one of a small handful of active NHL players to have appeared in a playoff game with the Sabres. He spent six seasons in Buffalo to begin his career, most notably winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie in 2010, before being traded to the Jets midway through the 2014-15 campaign.

Myers enjoyed some of his greatest NHL success with the Jets, helping the club reach the 2018 Western Conference Final and putting up strong offensive numbers at 5-on-5 and on the power play. He excelled as a secondary piece on a Jets blue line that also included Dustin Byfuglien, Josh Morrissey, Jacob Trouba, Ben Chiarot, and Tobias Enstrom.

Through 1,123 career NHL games over 17 seasons with the Sabres, Jets, and Canucks, Myers has collected 100 goals and 403 points. He’s added seven goals and 16 points in 61 playoff contests across his tenures with all three teams.
