The Vegas Golden Knights took a 1-0 series lead over the Carolina Hurricanes by winning a back-and-forth affair on Tuesday night, and on Thursday, the Hurricanes flipped the script with a stunning third-period rally to a erase a 2-0 deficit before earning a 4-3 win in overtime.

The Hurricanes came out of the gate with a strong effort in the first period, dominating possession of the puck, shot attempts and scoring chances alike, but it was the visitors who struck first.

Mitch Marner sent a perfect flip toward the Carolina blue line to set up a one-on-one battle between Sean Walker and Brett Howden that Howden one, springing him for a breakaway on Frederik Andersen.

Howden beat Andersen to the glove side for his 12th goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, which matched his output from the entirety of the regular season.

That was all the scoring for a first period that saw the Golden Knights go down a man when Brayden McNabb took a slap shot from Nikolaj Ehlers directly to the face. Emily Kaplan reported on the ESPN broadcast that McNabb departed the Lenovo Center for a hospital for further evaluation.

Despite being down their top shutdown defenseman, the Golden Knights continued a phenomenal defensive effort, as Jeremy Lauzon bumped up to the top pairing alongside Shea Theodore.

After the Canes dominated the first period, Vegas flipped the ice in the second, earning the majority of the opportunities throughout the middle frame until Howden won another one-on-one battle, this time against Jaccob Slavin, and tucked the puck past Andersen to make it 2-0.

Carolina had more of a push for the rest of the second period, but the hosts were unable to find the back of the net and went into the third facing a two-goal deficit.

It looked like Vegas would cruise to a shutout win for most of the third period, but Logan Stankoven broke up Carter Hart’s bid for a shutout when he won a puck battle below the goal line and stuffed the puck home to give Carolina life with just under 10 minutes remaining.

The Hurricanes got even just a few minutes later when another flip to the neutral zone caused havoc. William Carrier stayed onside and played the puck through a battle to Mark Jankowski, who wired home a perfect writer off the bar and in to tie the game.

The Golden Knights appeared to potentially take the lead when Ivan Barbashev pushed home a puck that Andersen had just covered. The play was ruled no goal on the ice, and Vegas challenged. The call stood, giving Carolina a power play.

The Hurricanes broke their special teams drought in dramatic fashion, as Jordan Staal tipped home a Shayne Gostisbehere wrist shot to make it 3-2 in a matter of moments.

Game 2 had more twists and turns, though, as the Hurricanes killed off a Jackson Blake penalty, only for Mark Stone to tip a Marner wrist shot in to tie the game with under 90 seconds left and send it to overtime.

Early in overtime, Game 1 hero Tomas Hertl tripped Staal around the boards, giving a suddenly-productive Carolina power play a chance to win the game, and they did exactly that when Seth Jarvis hammered a one-timer home off a feed from Gostisbehere.

Game 3 is set for Saturday night at 8:00 PM Eastern from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, as both teams will look to take control of the series.
