Vegas Golden Knights center Nicolas Roy has been fined $7,812.50 by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety on Friday night for his cross-check to the face of Edmonton Oilers center Trent Frederic from Game 2 of their second-round Stanley Cup Playoff series.

This is the first time in Roy’s career that he has received supplemental discipline. Due to the lack of intent on the play and Roy’s lack of previous history, the fine seemed to be the most appropriate route to go with the play.

Roy also picked up a five-minute major in overtime for the cross-check. Still, it didn’t prove an immediate problem for his team, as they killed off the penalty before eventually allowing the OT winning goal to Leon Draisaitl, who finished a two-on-one chance with Connor McDavid.

Roy and Frederic found themselves battling for the puck along the boards in the Oilers’ defensive zone when the puck popped up in the air. While Frederic’s initial move looked to play the puck, Roy responded with a cross-check to Frederic’s face.

After taking the blow, Frederic was noticeably shaken up and bleeding, and Roy was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct.

While that altercation will go in front of the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, the later altercation between Oilers forward Viktor Arvidsson and Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb, which saw McNabb fold into the end boards, will not.

“He blew it, he missed the call. I don’t know what else to say,” Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy said about the Arvidsson hit. “It’s a can-opener trip, it’s a dangerous play, it’s all those things. But it didn’t get called, so you’ve got to keep playing.”

Roy, 28, played 71 games for the Golden Knights in 2024-25, netting 15 goals and 31 points. He has a goal and three points through his first eight playoff games. Meanwhile, Frederic, 27 has a goal and three points in 10 playoff games this spring, after posting eight goals and 15 points in 58 regular-season games, split between the Oilers and Boston Bruins.

With a 2–0 series lead, the Oilers will look to continue winning as the series shifts to Rogers Place for Game 3 on Saturday night and Game 4 on Monday.
