Golden Knights sign defenseman Dylan Coghlan to one-year contract

The Vegas Golden Knights have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with defenseman Dylan Coghlan, according to reports by Sportsnet’s Irfaan Gaffar and Elliotte Friedman.
Coghlan, 27, appeared in six NHL games with the Winnipeg Jets during the 2024-25 regular season. The 6’2″ right-handed defenseman previously spent parts of the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons with the Golden Knights.
According to Friedman, Coghlan’s new one-year deal with the Golden Knights carries a $775,000 NHL cap hit.
$775K
An undrafted player, Coghlan first signed with the Golden Knights organization in 2017 during his stellar tenure with the WHL’s Tri-City Americans. The Duncan, B.C. product debuted with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves in the 2018-19 season and immediately established himself as a capable two-way defender in the pro ranks.
Coghlan appeared in 29 NHL games with Vegas in 2020-21 and 59 more the following year before being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes alongside Max Pacioretty as part of the Golden Knights’ major salary-clearing maneuvers in the 2022 offseason.
After that, Coghlan skated in just 18 NHL games with the Hurricanes over the following two seasons before being sent to the Jets one year ago in exchange for future considerations.
Now, Coghlan is slated to return to a Vegas team that just lost veteran star Alex Pietrangelo for the foreseeable future due to a variety of injuries. The Golden Knights have a glaring weakness on the right side, with Brayden McNabb and Zach Whitecloud currently projected to be their top two options at the position when the 2025-26 season begins.
Through 112 career NHL games over parts of five seasons with the Golden Knights, Hurricanes, and Jets, Coghlan has collected six goals and 22 points while averaging 13:53 of ice time. He has yet to skate in a game during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
