Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin becomes second NHLer to record 21 consecutive 20-goal seasons

Alex Ovechkin has made a habit out of making NHL history, and he did so again Sunday night when the Washington Capitals forward scored his 20th goal of the season in a game against the Nashville Predators, becoming just the second player in league history to reach the 20-goal mark in 21 consecutive seasons.

Ovechkin was tied with Hockey Hall of Famer Ron Francis with 20 20-goal campaigns, and is now behind only Gordie Howe, who finished his own Hall of Fame career with 22 seasons with at least 20 goals.
Ovechkin is also the first player in NHL history to achieve the feat in his first 21 seasons.
The 40-year-old winger now has 20 goals and 19 assists for 39 points through 46 games, giving him 917 goals and 745 assists for 1,662 points in 1,537 career regular-season contests. He is the NHL’s all-time goal leader, having broke Wayne Gretzky’s previous record of 894 towards the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
Ovechkin also has 77 goals and 70 assists for 144 points in 161 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Through 21 NHL seasons, Ovechkin has recorded nine 50-goal campaigns and has won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy nine times, awarded to the player with the most goals during an NHL regular season. Ovechkin has also won the Hart Trophy three times, awarded to the league’s most valuable player.
Ovechkin also has the most power-play goals in NHL history, with his goal Sunday night being the 329th of his career.
Among other notable honors, Ovechkin won the 2006 Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie, and led the league with 110 points in 2007-08 – the only Art Ross Trophy of his career. He took home the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP en route to his only Stanley Cup in 2018.
Internationally, Ovechkin has won the World Championship three times and has broken multiple records at various junior international tournaments with Russia.
