Capitals has the assets to get aggressive this offseason – but will they?

The Stanley Cup window remains open for the Washington Capitals next season.
On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli chatted about what the Capitals could do this offseason.
Tyler Yaremchuk: It’s an interesting team in Washington. They obviously took the big, big jump to the top of the Eastern Conference. They’re in a pretty good spot here heading into the summer. First off, their LTIR contracts are off the books. Without Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie, they’re no longer going to be dancing in LTIR room. They have legitimate cap space here. They could accrue next season if they want to. They have a pick in every round, for the first five rounds. They have $9.3 million in cap space and they have 20 players under contract. If [Chris Patrick] and company wanted to get a little aggressive here and make a big splash, they have all of the assets to do so.
Frank Seravalli: What’s more impressive than that is their prospect pool is so deep and loaded that, truthfully, I’m not really expecting big things from the Capitals this offseason. Their roster is mostly filled out. They have some middle-six, bottom-six forward questions to answer. Their defense is more or less locked in. Their goaltenders are definitely locked in. So with all of those things considered, and yes at some point you’re going to need to replace some of the goals from Alex Ovechkin as he enters the final year of his contract as well, they’re in a spot where they could be a little aggressive and greedy if they wanted to, or do they just stay the course? I think Patrick is leaning toward just staying the course because this team has so much of an influx of young players coming that they will just allow that to play itself out and if you’re already a playoff team anyway then you’re probably in pretty good shape.
