Capitals acquire Calle Rosen from Blues for Corey Schueneman

The Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues agreed to a trade on Monday, with the Capitals receiving defenseman Calle Rosen in exchange for defenseman Corey Schueneman.

Between the two players involved in the swap, Rosen has more NHL experience, having played 93 games split between the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche, and Blues over six seasons. Schueneman has played just 35 games in the NHL spread over three seasons, mostly with the Canadiens except for four games played for the Blues last season.
Both players have played strictly at the AHL level this season. In nine games with the Hershey Bears this year, Rosen has a goals and six assists for seven points. Schueneman has a goals and five assists for six points in nine games for the Springfield Thunderbirds. Rosen and Schueneman are currently on identical one-year, $775,000 contracts.
Rosen, 31, was never drafted by an NHL team, and began is career in North America by signing a two-year entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs back in 2017. The Vaxjo, Sweden native spent two seasons with the Maple Leafs’ organization, mostly played with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, including helping the Marlies win their first Calder Cup in the 2017-18 season. Prior to the 2019-2020 season, Rosen was traded to the Avalanche as part of the deal that sent Nazem Kadri to Colorado in exchange for Tyson Barrie and Alexander Kerfoot. Partway through that season, Rosen was dealt back to Toronto in exchange for goaltender Michael Hutchinson. Rosen would then sign as a free agent with the Blues the following offseason, where he would go on to have most of his NHL experience.
Schueneman, 30, also was undrafted and signed a one-year deal with the Calgary Flames organization after a four-year collegiate career with Western Michigan. The Milford, Michigan native would then go on to spend time with the Canadiens, Avalanche, and Capitals organizations.
