Capitals’ Logan Thompson out day-to-day with lower-body injury

Not the most promising news in the U.S. capital.
When speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery stated that goaltender Logan Thompson will not be a participant in the day’s practice and is considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
While Carbery didn’t go into detail about exactly what is ailing Thompson, there was an incident where the right-handed netminder seemed to have been shaken up during the Capitals’ matchup with the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night. Early in the second period, Thompson lunged to his right while attempting to make a save on a rebound. He lay on the ice for a few moments after Washington cleared the zone.
Thompson got back on his feet and continued with the play. He ended up finishing the game, making 21 saves in a 5-2 loss.
While it’s not yet known what the severity of Thompson’s injury, the 29-year-old has some time to heal up ahead of the Caps’ next game, as the team doesn’t play until Saturday night, when they host the Buffalo Sabres.
Thompson has a decent, but not great, start to the 2026-27 season. In seven appearances thus far, he has a record of 4-3-0, with a 2.90 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage. After winning his first three starts of the campaign, the Calgary native has been on the losing end of three of his past four decisions, including allowing five goals on 27 shots against the Seattle Kraken on Oct. 11.
Even though the Capitals didn’t make the Stanley Cup Playoffs last year, Thompson is coming off arguably the best season of his career. In 58 games in 2025-26, he went 31-21-6, with a 2.44 GAA, a .912 SV% and four shutouts.
In 211 regular-season appearances in the NHL, Thompson is 122-62-23, with a 2.58 GAA, a .911 SV% and 10 shutouts. He’s 7-7, with a 2.40 GAA and .918 SV% in 14 postseason contests.
