A young and talented blueliner is getting a nice payday.
The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Martin Fehervary to a seven-year contract extension. The deal, set to begin with the 2026-27 season, will carry an AAV of $6 million through the 2032-33 season.

The extension comes as Fehervary heads into the final season of his three-year contract, which he signed with the Capitals in July 2023. The deal has a cap hit of $2.675 million. He would’ve become a restricted free agent next summer, with arbitration rights.
Fehervary has slowly grown into one of the more reliable defenders for reigning Jack Adams Award winner Spencer Carbery, having made great strides this past season. In 81 games, the most the Slovakian has ever played in a single year, he set career highs in assists (20) and points (25). He also registered a career-best plus/minus of +18 while averaging 19 minutes per game.
Unfortunately, the 25-year-old suffered a knee injury in the Capitals’ penultimate game of the regular season against the New York Islanders. It led to him undergoing surgery to repair his meniscus, resulting in Fehervary missing the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Capitals advanced to the second round before being ousted by the Carolina Hurricanes.
Across five seasons in the NHL, Fehervary has appeared in 299 games, scoring 22 goals and 53 assists for 75 points, with a career rating of +13 while averaging 19:29 of ice time. He’s also posted three points in 12 postseason games.
Currently, the Washington Capitals are projected to have $8.725 million in cap space next season, and over $47 million for the 2026-27 campaign, according to CapWages.
