It was a seemingly inevitable deal for the left-handed shooting blueliner, as the Capitals acquired his signing rights in a trade with the Minnesota Wild on Saturday. In exchange, the Capitals gave up defender Chase Priskie Chisholm, while the teams exchanged late-round picks in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Chisholm was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1. He was on a one-year deal with the Wild with a cap hit of $1 million. His new deal with Washington is the largest AAV of his time in the NHL.
Chisholm appeared in 66 games this past season with the Wild, missing a few games due to both injury and being a healthy scratch. However, it didn’t stop him from scoring two goals and 10 assists for a career-high 12 points. It was his first full season in the NHL, having spent parts of the previous two seasons with the Manitoba Moose, the Winnipeg Jets’ American Hockey League affiliate.
Chisholm was initially taken by the Jets in the fifth round, 150th overall, of the 2018 NHL Draft. After two-plus seasons with the organization, he was put on waivers in late January and ended up being claimed by the Wild.
In 99 career NHL appearances, Chisholm has scored five goals and 16 assists for 21 points. He has never appeared in a Stanley Cup Playoff game.
With the new contract on the books, the Capitals are projected to have $8.725 million in cap space for the 2025-26 season, according to CapWages.
