Capitals sign Justin Sourdif to two-year contract

The Washington Capitals secured one of their new acquisitions on Saturday, signing right winger Justin Sourdif to a two-year, $1.65 million contract with an annual average value of $825,000.
It is the former Florida Panthers forward’s first contract after his three-year entry-level deal expired, and it will pay him $50,000 above the NHL league minimum. Previously, he had signed with the Panthers after they selected him in the third round, 87th overall, in the 2020 NHL Draft.
The 23-year-old has played just four NHL games in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, scoring his first NHL goal and point in a 4-1 Florida win over the Nashville Predators in February 2025. The Capitals added him ahead of the 2025 NHL Draft in exchange for a second-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft and a sixth-round selection in the 2027 NHL Draft.
Sourdif spent most of last season with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, netting 16 goals and 34 points 43 games, before adding four goals and 10 points in 18 AHL Playoff games, helping the Checkers to the Calder Cup Finals, where they fell to the Abbotsford Canucks in six games.
Before his professional career, Sourdif was a standout over five seasons in the WHL, playing for a combined 199 games for the Vancouver Giants and Edmonton Oil Kings, where he scored 86 goals and 205 points.
Internationally, his play in junior helped him earn a call to represent Canada at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where he scored a goal and five points in five games to help the team to a silver medal.
While the native of Richmond, B.C. will have an opportunity to compete for an NHL roster spot, he is expected to primarily play for the AHL’s Hershey Bears, who finished first in the Atlantic Division, before falling to Sourdif’s Checkers in the Eastern Conference Final.
