The Washington Capitals made their first move of the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline early on Friday, bringing in left winger Anthony Beauvillier from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for their second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.

The 27-year-old winger is amid a 13-goal, 20-point season through 63 games with the Penguins, whom he signed with as a free agent on July 1, 2024. Joining the Capitals, he will suit up for the sixth NHL team of his career, and fifth over the last two seasons.

Ahead of his brief spell with the Penguins,  Beauvillier had even shorter spells with the Nashville Predators and Chicago Blackhawks, in a 2023-24 season that saw him play for three teams – 22 games with the Vancouver Canucks, 23 with the Blackhawks and 15 with the Predators.

Initially drafted 28th overall in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders, the Sorel-Tracy, Quebec native played parts of seven seasons with the New York City club. In 2022-23, Beauvillier was traded to the Canucks in a trade headlined by then-Vancouver captain, Bo Horvat.

Through 613 NHL regular-season games,  Beauvillier has 129 goals and 266 points. Additionally, he’s played 55 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, scoring 15 goals and 31 points, most recently in a 2024 first-round exit with the Predators.

Joining the Capitals, Beauvillier adds offensive depth to a team looking to make a deep run in the playoffs, enjoying a bounce-back year under head coach Spencer Carbery and a rekindled goalscoring run from Alexander Ovechkin, who trails Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record by just 10 markers.

After finishing the 2023-24 season with 91 points, the Capitals sit atop the Metropolitan Division with 88 points. They hold a 10-point lead over the second-place Carolina Hurricanes heading into a Friday night clash with the Detroit Red Wings.
