— Washington Capitals (@Capitals) September 15, 2025The team used its top players – captain Alex Ovechkin, forward Tom Wilson and defenseman John Carlson – to showcase the new jerseys.
The sweaters feature a healthy mix of new and old. The red and navy blue have been a staple of the team since it updated its look in 2007, along with the particular number fonts. That look marked the end of the everyday use of the eagle, which had been in existence since the beginning of the 1995-96 campaign.
The Screaming Eagle was reintroduced to the masses in 2020 as part of the first Reverse Retro jerseys. Last season, the full-fledged design that was used in the late ’90s and early 2000s was brought back in 2022 as part of the Reverse Retro 2.0, with the diagonal ‘Capitals’ driving underneath the eagle crest.
Those jerseys have become rather famous, as Ovechkin scored the 802nd goal of his NHL career while wearing the alternate uniform.
The white shoulders and striping are a similar look that harkens back to the style of sweaters the Capitals donned since its introduction to the NHL in 1974, lasting over two decades. On the shoulders of the new third jerseys is the alternate logo the Caps utilized during its ‘black and blue’ days.
The Capitals will wear the new sweaters 15 times during the 2025-26 campaign, starting with Friday, Oct. 17, when Washington hosts the Minnesota Wild. The last time Caps’ fans will get to see these jerseys in action will be on April 4 against the Buffalo Sabres.
