Things got heated in Tampa on Thursday night.

— Brady Trettenero (@BradyTrett) March 4, 2022Cooper’s frustration came from a play late in the second period. Corey Perry slashed Penguins defender Mark Friedman’s stick out of his hands and Perry was subsequently swarmed by Pittsburgh players around the team’s net. Multiple members of the Lightning then jumped into the action to defend Perry.
The result of the chaos was the Penguins getting a power play, as Perry was handed two minors for roughing, Anthony Cirelli, Bryan Rust, and Friedman were called for roughing.
The Penguins won by a 5-1 margin.
This was the second time Cooper has been ejected in the last two calendar years, also the last coach to be tossed from a game since he was removed from the bench during a March 7, 2020 win against Boston.
Three coaches have been fined $25,000 by the NHL this season for “inappropriate conduct” after berating the officials from the bench: Carolina’s Rod Brind’Amour, Dallas’ Rick Bowness and Nashville’s John Hynes.
If Cooper has already been warned this season, he will almost assuredly be docked $25,000 in pay on Friday.
Cooper also turned a side eye toward the officiating in his postgame press conference, throwing a little shade toward the Pittsburgh Penguins..
“That team, for some reason, they’re by far the lowest penalized team in the league,” Cooper told reporters. “I’m not sure why, but they are.”
