It’s been a roller coaster season for the New York Islanders in 2023-24. At one point in November, the Long Island squad lost seven straight games, not winning their first game of the month until Nov. 18. After that, they seemed to get back to normal, climbing into a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division.

But on Tuesday night, the Islanders blew a 4-1 lead to the lowly San Jose Sharks, giving up three goals from the Sharks in the final eight minutes of the game, capped off by a William Eklund overtime goal, handing the Islanders a 5-4 OT-loss.

On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk were joined by The Athletic reporter Arthur Staple for the latest edition of “The All 32” to share his analysis on the Islanders, how they’ve lost some heartbreak games, and what to make of them as we approach the one-third mark of the season.

Tyler Yaremchuk: A pleasure to welcome Arthur Staple to the show. Uh, what the hell happened last night? That’s about as unacceptable or embarrassing an overtime loss can get, no?

Arthur Staple: Well if you’ve been watching the Islanders this year, it’s pretty much par for the course. It just happened against a pretty bad team. They’ve blown 11 third-period leads out of 24 games, which is just a remarkable number.

And yet somehow, with their odd 10-7-7 record, they’re still a playoff team, so there is some good. But the bad stuff is so maddening, and the fans’ pitchforks are out for head coach Lane Lambert, so it’s hard to blame them.
