What’s the New York Islanders’ biggest need this summer?

While the Stanley Cup Playoffs are still ongoing, most of the NHL is getting their offseason plans in place. One of those teams was a group that surprised some by making it into the postseason.
The New York Islanders went from a rebuilding team to a playoff team, finishing third in the Metropolitan Division. However, their postseason run did not last long, as the Carolina Hurricanes eliminated them in the first round.
Even though the Islanders were able to put an end to their three-year playoff drought, there are some needs the team will have to address if they want to make it back of the postseason and potentially make an honest run. Whether it be finding more offensive weapons to help the squad that had the second-fewest goals for heading into the playoffs, or addressing concerns on the blueline, Lou Lamoriello has some work to do to keep the Islanders on the upward trajectory.
On Monday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Colby Cohen look at what moves the Islanders might make this offseason.
Colby Cohen: To me, their biggest need is a new general manager, and I know that’s not going to happen because they came out and said so…They don’t have a single forward signed under the age of 26. This is a team that continuosly looks slow, they continuously look one-dimensional. You’ve either got [Bo] Horvat and [Mat] Barzal together and you have one line that produces, or you split them up and nobody produces.
I don’t see a ton of direction coming from the organization…I have no idea what the Islanders do to pull themselves out of this no-man’s-land, meddling funk that I see their roster in.
Frank Seravalli: You’ve got 17 players signed, and only $6 million in cap space. If you have any hope or prayer of doing anything meaningful this summer, it’s going to be to try and find a way to create cap space. That would probably include moving off of a piece.
