The New Jersey Devils goaltending continues to be a struggling point for the team, as they find themselves with the second worst team save percentage in the league at .878%, with only the Carolina Hurricanes dealing with worse goaltending. It’s getting to the point where it’s costing them too many wins and they’re giving themselves less runway to get into the playoffs, so they either need to figure out what they have with Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid, or make a move for another goalie.

Carter Hutton joined Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli on Daily Faceoff Live to talk about the Devil’s goaltending situation.

Carter Hutton: I think the Devils are definitely a team that needs help. Even look at Vanecek’s numbers, an 11-5-0 record with only an .883 save percentage is pretty impressive to see how New Jersey can put pucks in the net.

With Schmid, he’s so young. You get into the playoffs and he has that little bit of success, but it’s a bit of a blur sometimes in the playoffs. You’re playing and you get in this state where all of a sudden now you’re expectations are a lot higher. You have all summer to sit on that, all training camp, and now you’re expected to be good, and you don’t really have that veteran presence to protect him, right? It’s not like Vanecek is this big veteran that has a ton of games played either.

So it’s been tricky and with a team like this that wants to win, with that Metro Division being as tight as it is, they have a big matchup tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers. I think it’s time for them to make a move because it might be a little too late if you wait too long in that division.
