The Winnipeg Jets could be without their superstar goaltender for at least a month.

According to a report from TSN’s Darren Dreger, Connor Hellebuyck is slated to be out for four to six weeks as he recovers from a “minor arthroscopic knee procedure.”

Hellebuyck, the reigning Hart Trophy winner as the league’s most valuable player and Vezina Trophy winner as the league’s best goalie, was off to another strong start prior to the news.

Through his first 14 starts of the campaign, he had posted an 8-6-0 record to go with a .913 save percentage and 2.51 goals against average. Last year, Hellebuyck turned in one of the greatest seasons in the history of modern goaltending as he swept the two major awards available to him while going 47-12-3 with a .925 SV% and 2.00 GAA to go with eight shutouts.

While the Jets have not yet made any official announcement as to Hellebuyck’s status, they have called up goalie Thomas Milic from their AHL affiliate Manitoba Moose. If Hellebuyck is indeed sidelined, Milic will form a tandem with Eric Comrie until the star American is ready to return to game action.

A timeline of four-to-six weeks would put Hellebuyck’s return to play right around late December, meaning this issue should not endanger his availability for the Winter Olympics in February in Italy. If that were to change, it would be a big blow to Team USA, but Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin and the rest of the USA Hockey brass would have plenty of quality options at their disposal, including Thatcher Demko, Jeremy Swayman, Jake Oettinger, Dustin Wolf and Joey Daccord.

Hellebuyck was the starter for the Americans at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, with Oettinger and Swayman serving as the other two goalies on the roster.

For Winnipeg, the injury is a brutal break for a team that has gotten off to a 12-7-0 start to the season. The Jets host the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night and the Minnesota Wild on Sunday before heading off for a three-game road trip.

Comrie, a 30-year-old who has a career high of 20 starts that he set last year, is 4-1-0 this season with a 2.60 GAA and .908 SV%.
