Jets’ Jonathan Toews out day-to-day after ‘tweaking something’

An update on a returning player doesn’t lead to much cause for concern.
When speaking to the media on Thursday, Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel revealed that forward Jonathan Toews is out day-to-day due to injury.
Arniel didn’t specify what is ailing the veteran center, but stated that Toews is out after “tweaking something” during the Jets’ preseason game against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. However, there didn’t seem to be much anxiety surrounding the 37-year-old’s condition.

— Ken Wiebe (@WiebesWorld) October 2, 2025It wasn’t revealed whether Toews will be in the lineup for Winnipeg’s final preseason contest on Friday night against the Calgary Flames.
There’s a lot of excitement surrounding Toews heading into the campaign. The Winnipeg native hasn’t played since the 2022-23 season, when he finished up a 15-year run with the Chicago Blackhawks. He signed a one-year contract with the Jets this past July, with the deal carrying a cap hit of $2 million, but an AAV of $7 million thanks to a possible $5 million in performance bonuses.
Many wonder what to expect out of the former Chicago captain. He stepped away from the game due to health concerns, which limited his production and kept him out of action during the entire 2021 season. It’s hard to expect that he’ll be in the same form during his glory years in the Windy City, but he can certainly provide some veteran experience to a Jets team that has hopes of making a deep postseason run.
In 1.067 games, Toews has scored 372 goals and 511 assists for 883 points, with another 119 points in 137 playoff games. He helped the Hawks win three Stanley Cups, taking home the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2010. He also won the Selke Trophy in 2013, as well as the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award in 2014-15.
The Jets, last year’s Presidents’ Trophy winners, open up the 2025-26 regular season next Thursday against the Dallas Stars, a rematch of last year’s Central Division Final.
