Will the Jets run with a three-goalie rotation?

For the first time in roughly a decade, there is uncertainty between the pipes for the Winnipeg Jets. After Friday’s blockbuster deal with the New Jersey Devils, star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck is no longer a Jet, raising the question of how Winnipeg plans to divvy up its workload in the crease.
During Hellebuyck’s hold out to start this season, veteran Stuart Skinner grabbed the reigns, starting eight of the Jets’ 11 games while posting a 3-2-3 record with a solid .911 save percentage and a 2.60 goals-against average. Clay Stevenson has gotten three starts as Skinner’s backup, going 1-2-0 with a .893 SV% and a 3.08 GAA. As part of the Hellebuyck trade, Winnipeg also received netminder Nico Daws, who went 2-2-0 with a .872 SV% and a 2.78 GAA in four starts with New Jersey.
On Monday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, hosts Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton discussed the possibility of the Jets keeping all three goalies on their roster.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Do you think they can make the three-goalie system work in Winnipeg, or do you think they have to make a decision?
Carter Hutton: I think for a limited time you can make it work, and I think Nico Daws has a lot of upside. I think the advantage right now goes to Nico Daws, just from the sense that he was involved in the trade. And again, just for saving face, if he’s going to be playing a backup role, you want to kind of protect him and he can get in there and get starts.
But with Nico Daws’ game, he strikes a lot of boxes when it comes to NHL goalie coaches. He’s big, he moves well, he can play. He just hasn’t had success. I think the fact is, he’s going to get first dibs in this situation. I think Stevenson is there and temporarily this is a three goalie-situation, but time will tell. At the end of the day, it’s going to be Skinner, and if the Jets come out of this, it’s going to be his steady play.
