Jets select Sascha Boumedienne No. 28 overall in 2025 NHL Draft

The Winnipeg Jets have selected Swedish defenseman Sascha Boumedienne with the 28th overall pick Friday night at The Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Boumedienne spent the 2024-25 season with Boston University in the NCAA, where he tallied three goals and 10 assists for 13 points in 40 games.
The 18-year-old played on a loaded Boston University team with players such as Cole Hutson and Tom Willander on the roster; there was little pressure on the youngest player in the NCAA to perform at a high level right out of the gate.
Boumedienne represented Sweden at the U18 World Championship, where he broke the single-tournament scoring record for a defenseman. He recorded 14 points in the first five games of the tourney and was named the tournament’s best defenseman.
The Swedish native has been playing hockey in North America since 2021-22 when he joined the Ohio Blue Jackets U16 AAA Team. After two seasons of development there, Boumedienne made the jump to the United States Hockey League. He played for the Youngstown Phantoms during the 2023-24 season, tallying 27 points in 49 games.
Daily Faceoff prospect analyst Steven Ellis ranked Boumedienne No. 27 in his Final Top-120 rankings. “Boumedienne didn’t have explosive numbers in college, but most expect him to take a big step forward next year. Just based on his play from late February and onward, Boumedienne seems to have really honed in on his puck skills. You match that with his speed and his penchant for making high-risk, high-reward plays and there’s a ton to love. Boumedienne has high-end attributes that teams love, but he just needs to calm down and play at his own pace. If he can do that, he’ll be excellent.”
Boumedienne comes from a strong hockey family as his father, Josef, played 47 games in the NHL and currently serves as Sweden’s senior men’s general manager. His brother, Wilson, is considered a top prospect for the 2028 NHL Draft.
